Supporting your Athlete Through Tough Times with Joanie Beisel
Today I had the chance to sit down and talk to Joanie Beisel, mom to one of USA Swimming’s favorite swimmers ever- Elizabeth Beisel. Joanie joined us on a webinar called Supporting Your Athlete Through Tough Times. In this hilarious conversation, Joanie gave such amazing insight on how to support your athlete through the highs and lows of sport. Here are some of my favorite pieces of advice Joanie gave parents:
It takes a village to raise an athlete- parents, coaches, teachers, principals, and the community.
As parents, you don’t always need to have all of the answers. It’s okay to not know the perfect thing to say in every situation.
Teach your child to be humble in their wins and your losses. While your child might be celebrating on your best day, someone just lost. Be mindful of others’ feelings.
Help your child focus on what they can control. Your child can’t control anything in a race except what THEY do.
Encourage your child to be the best THEY can be, not the best compared to anyone else.
In disappointing times, find your silver lining. How are you going to learn from that experience and come out of it even stronger.
A HUGE thank you to Joanie for joining me today! If you missed it make sure you check out the replay!
