Prepare to be inspired. The Carpool Lane with Special Guest Chaunté Lowe.
Where do I even begin? Chaunté Lowe has hands down one of the most inspirational stories I have ever heard. She is warm, funny, kind, strong, no not just strong, she’s a warrior. Chaunté is a four time Olympian competing in the high jump. She is training for a fifth Olympics while raising 3 children, working as a financial professional, and winning her battle against breast cancer. And today she joined us on The Carpool Lane to share her story.
The overwhelming message Chaunté delivered is to never let any challenge or any obstacle stand in the way of your dreams. Chaunté is unfailingly optimistic. She isn’t the glass half full kind of person, she is the glass is 100% full kind of person. She attributes overcoming a turbulent childhood to constantly looking at the positives in her life.
Chaunté is patience and perseverance personified. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, she finished in 6th place. In 2017, NINE years after the Beijing Olympics, (to put this in perspective she had competed at the London Olympics AND the Rio Olympics in the meantime) she was awarded a bronze medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics after 3 of her competitors tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. Rather than focusing on what she had lost, she chose to focus on everything that she had gained over the past nine years.
Her energy and laughter are contagious, and I dare you not to smile while watching Chaunté share some pieces of advice for athletes and parents.
Have a LOT of goals at the same time.
Use disappointments every day in practice- when things are challenging, think of them and use them as motivation.
When dealing with nerves remind yourself that your competition is just like practice so that you aren’t placing too much pressure on yourself to perform.
Another way to manage nerves is to have a ROUTINE- Chaunté’s routine before a competition is written to the minute!
A routine is what best works for YOU and you learn it through trial and error. After a great competition, write down what you did and try to replicate that at every competition.
Only ever focus on controlling what you can control.
Listen to your body, and advocate for yourself when you feel that you are not being heard.
Never let yourself become defeated in your own mind.
Chaunté I cannot thank you enough for bringing your energy and light into our chat today on The Carpool Lane. If you missed it, you can catch it here!
